Tech 1 Racing Team driver Frank Bird was in action at the opening round of the 2018 FormulaRenault Eurocup Championship at Paul Ricard in France at the weekend but despite a promising start, it turned out to be disappointing for the teenage Cumbrian.
The 18 year old originally from Penrith was making his debut for Simon and Sarah Abadie’s Toulouse-based team in the Be Wiser Insurance, Hager, Loco Energy Drink and Frank Bird Poultry-backed car and the weekend started well despite the wet conditions which saw Frank inside the top ten in both free practice sessions.
With a drying track, the first qualifying session saw Frank end up in 17th but it was in the second qualifier where he made a small error and ran off track, damaging the front of the car which necessitated him to start the opening race from the back of the grid.
From there, Frank had a good race to end up in 16th but sadly in race two, a collision from behind early on scuppered his chances leaving him to rue his luck at the season opener.
Frank Bird: “The weekend started off quite well in wet conditions running inside the top 10 in bothfree practice sessions. Going into Q1 the track fully dried up and our pace was quite good putting me in 17th. During Q2, on my second flying lap I made a small mistake, ran wide out of Turn 2 and hit a bollard which broke the front wing and that was qualifying over. It meant I started race one from 28th on the grid but my race pace was really good, and I had some good battles to finish in 16th place. In race two, I made a good start from 17th on the grid but then got hit from behind going into Turn 5 and lost lots of positions, then I just didn't really have the pace compared to race one. Overall the weekend was quite good, thanks to the team and all my sponsors, I’m looking forward now to the next round next weekend at Monza.”
