Shane 'Shakey' Byrne

“I’ve always wanted to defend the title so I’m over the moon to do it and going into the winter as the 2017 BSB champion is an amazing feeling.”  -  SHANE BYRNE

Six-times British Superbike Champion Shakey continues for a seventh successive season with Paul Bird’s team having sampled much success together in the past and the pair are firm friends. The ever-popular Londoner was head hunted by talent-spotter Bird at the end of 2002 in a bid to retain the BSB title won by Steve Hislop that year on board the PBM-run MonsterMob Ducati in the hands of the late, great Hislop. Byrne did just that and wrapped up the title in style in late August, the same month that he sensationally won two WSB races as a wild card entry at Brands Hatch to give the team its first World Championship successes. After a couple of years in MotoGP, Byrne returned to ride the Stobart Honda for Bird in BSB 2007 finishing fifth before winning the title for Ducati the following year.

Two more years in World Superbikes saw Shakey return to domestic action with Honda where he led the series for most of 2011 before just missing out on the title although he did win six races including a double at the final round. Despite a not ideal start to the 2012 season, which included a nasty injury sustained at Cadwell Park, Shakey proved to be the dominant force when it mattered towards the end of the season to lift the title at his local Brands Hatch circuit.

2013 saw him take his tally to 51 race victories and once again led the title race for most of the season, but just lost out in the very last race of the year at Brands Hatch meaning he had to settle for runner-up spot to Alex Lowes.

He bounced back in superb style, however, by winning back the title in 2014 where he added another ten wins but couldn’t quite add a fifth title despite dominating the first half of the season with another seven wins in 2015 so had to settle for runner up spot behind Josh Brookes after it went down to the final meeting of the season at Brands 2016 saw a change to Ducati machinery with Shakey adding another nine victories to take his tally to a record 77 and with it, the title for a record breaking fifth time.

2017 was even more dramatic as bad luck and injury saw Byrne come from behind to take the title in sensational fashion in the very last race of the season. With another seven race wins, he upped his number of victories to 84 in claiming title number six.

He currently spends time between his home in Spain and his base in Kent with his Czech model wife Petra with whom he has two children, son Zack and daughter Lilly-Jade.
