Double Podium For Bird At Zandvoort

Sunday, June 20, 2021

It was a positive weekend at Zandvoort for both Team WRT and Penrith driver Frank Bird in the second round of the Fanatec GT World Cup Europe powered by AWS Sprint Cup, as they took a double podium in the Silver Cup.

The 21-year-old Cumbrian and Japanese teammate Ryuichiro Tomita followed up a superb third place in yesterday’s opening one-hour race with another superb effort to claim third place in today’s race in the factory-supported Audi R8 LMS.

The Dutch track suited the Audis and free practice saw Frank inside the top ten overall before qualifying in eighth overall despite the changeable weather which saw heavy thunderstorms.

In race one and on a track where overtaking opportunities are scarce, Frank improved to sixth at the start and maintained his position throughout his stint, which meant that in the second stint, Tomita could challenge the overall podium. However, they fell one place short by finishing fourth overall but stepped onto the third spot of the Silver Cup podium.

An off-track excursion by Tomita today relegated the #31 car of him and Bird to 25th place on the grid for today’s race but both drivers put in stunning performances to gradually climb the leaderboard to end up in seventh overall and claim yet another podium in the Silver Cup class.

Frank Bird: “We are very happy with the weekend, probably the best so far this season for us, with two podium finishes in the Silver Cup. Today we had a very good recovery after Ryu’s problem in qualifying. We see we have made a great step forward and improved a lot.”
